Travel fever

Although on that glorious Saturday morning there shouldn’t have been any reasons to think about gruesome things, but strange thoughts flew through my head. I was on my way with my bike. I decided to inquire South Tyrol now that the borders are open again by bike cycle Finally i can cross the Brenner Passo after my first try e few months ago where the borders closed about the pandemic and kept us all inside.

My plan this day was to drive to Merano over the passo Giovo , start from home and via the old Brenner Pass down to Meran- A 90 Km long ride ahead. The Brenner is certainly not suitable for someone who is looking for a challenge on the mountain, the landscape will only start to become beautiful after 20 minutes you have left the border and on Austrian side at the beginning of my trip ,so the middle of the Highway and the railway line are not really sensational as view. But that was quiet oke for the start… but than— , you get a amazing cycle road all the way to Merano on a old paved train-rail. You see , when you look in to the valley be need a beautiful landscape with small Tiroler villages, abandoned train stations let you remember the history of the piece of cyclepad

In the early morning I left my valley at 7. The sun was not yet high in the sky, the world had just woken up when I cross the border to South Tirol. Finally Italy , went trough my mind – A small village welcomed me. Yes, the black dot on the map only stands for a restaurant and a outlet. But anyway, I drove very slow trough the street, already breath The Italien flavor. Actually It counts only a total of 2 streets but oke , i’am here, pointed south. Some Italian terraces with restaurants on the right were open and a large ugly outlet center on the left As if people were stopping here to buy something, may i’ve bin thinking. People want vacation isn’t ? They want Italy, pizza, red wine & espresso. I still don’t understand why there are mega outlet centers here, but oké , I don’t care either actually. Slowly I roll down the road and before I had i bit off tempo , I was already out of ‘the village’ one turn to the left on the cycle pad starts all the way to Meran via Sterzing – Vipiteno , well signed

I finally feel freedom again when I cycle into the unknown. Almost alone only now and then I look at the map of how the path will run. Until then, I don’t care about all the altitude differences. i just enjoy the environment. After almost 2,5 hours in the Sattle I reach Sterzing-Vipiteno in the Northern part of italy

Sterzing (German pronunciation: [ˈʃtɛrtsɪŋ]; Italian: Vipiteno [vipiˈtɛːno]) is a comune in South Tyrol in northern Italy. It is the main village of the southern Wipptal, and the EisackRiver flows through the medieval town.

The 31 km long, scenically varied summit route over the Jaufenpass connects the Passeier Valley with the Eisack Valley. It is the shortest connection between the South Tyrolean tourist strongholds Merano (325 m) and Sterzing (948 m).
The Jaufenpass ( Passo Giovo ) is the northernmost inner Italian Alpine pass and is therefore in the heart of South Tyrol. The mighty Ötztal Alps rise in the north, the equally extensive Sarntal Alps in the south. The Jaufenpass is surrounded by the mountains Jaufenspitz (2483 m) and Saxner (2359 m) as well as by the wide Ratschingstal.
The crossing also offers beautiful views of the high Wilde (3840 m) with its glaciers in the south and the Tux Alps in the north.
According to the tour, the Jaufen is one of the top ten alpine passes, which you can join, because thanks to the beautiful landscape, pleasant incline values and varied route guidance, this pass is one of those you can enjoy if you are a real climb lover, be aware of the traffic of motorcyclistas from Germany and Austria.
If the landscape experience is in the foreground, you should drive from south to north if possible, very steep but stady. If you look at the matter from a sporting point of view, it is more comfortable to drive in the opposite direction because the road surface on the north ramp is in very poor condition and has many potholes The road condition were not ok, and a lot was being on-repaired.- i ended the pass in St Leonard am Passeiertal – the starting point of another great pass , the Timmelsjoch
